The Area - Nags Head
Hundreds of years ago Nags Head was easily recognizable by mariners because of the large sand dunes along the shore. Jockeys Ridge State Park is today?s landmark that mariners and visitors recognize as Nags Head Proper. The town is primarily made up of residential neighborhoods for year round residents and a wonderful stretch of oceanfront with homes and palatial estates. The Town consists of controlled growth communities and commercial spaces keeping the green aesthetics of the community a priority.
South Nags Head is not a separate town. It stretches from Whalebone Junction which is the place where Route 12, Hwy 158 and Hwy 64 meet to just before the National Park Service property begins just north of Oregon Inlet. This part of the Town is predominantly residential and very quiet.
